Mountain Bike Orienteering
WHAT IS MOUNTAIN BIKE ORIENTEERING
Mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) is an orienteering sport on a mountain bike. The competitor chooses a route individually by reading a map and navigates through control points marked in the map as well as in the terrain in a pre-defined order. Competitors are usually not allowed to ride off trails, tracks and roads. Fastest time wins. A map holder attached to handlebars as well as a compass are common pieces of equipment.
Racing is not restricted by any form of qualifying criteria. Race types include individual race, relay race (multiple competitors racing individually in sequence), and team races (two or more competitors riding together).
Races can be divided into several categories by course length:
- Sprint
- Middle distance
- Long distance
- Mass start
A race can also be defined as "free order", which means that the competitor can choose any order to navigate through the control points.
